The History of Scotland in 25 Objects

Visit Scotland have just announced the 25 objects which have shaped Scotland’s history.  One of them is right next door to us here in New Abbey!

The effigy of Lady Devorgilla

Lady Dervorgilla founded Sweetheart Abbey in 1273 in memory of her husband John Balliol. She was a wealthy and powerful Lady who also founded Balliol College, Oxford. The stone effigy of her holding the casket with the embalmed heart of her husband is within Sweetheart Abbey.

There’s more information about the Lady Dervorgilla’s story and her effigy in the ebook of the History of Scotland prepared by Visit Scotland. You can read all about it, and the other 24 objects, on this link here.

Sweetheart Abbey

The beautiful red sandstone ruin of Sweetheart Abbey is in the care of Historic Environment Scotland. It is open to visitors, and it’s always worth checking the opening times before you visit.
